A hot sweaty gym doesn’t sound appealing, probably doesn’t smell all that great either.
But running in the heat may help you consume less, than working out in air-conditioning.
A new study, published in that American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests exercising in the heat if you’re looking to lose weight.
On average men running for 40 minutes on a treadmill in moderate temperatures ate 300 more calories at a breakfast buffet afterwards than men running in the heat.
But researchers aren’t sure why this happens.
It could be because the heat dulls appetite. Men working out in warm temperatures had higher blood levels of peptide YY, a protein in the digestive tract that reduces appetite in humans, and signals “fullness.”
The researchers also claim cold weather has been shown to increase appetite.
However, they urge people do not exercise in overly sweltering conditions, due to risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.
Just like how the odor and humidity of an overly crowded gym makes you want to hurl your cookies.
